Decorating for the holidays can be a tedious or delightful process. Usually the holidays are filled with cheer as families come together to decorate the tree and take pictures for the upcoming year. Don’t wait until after you’ve sent out your holiday cards before you turn to decorating, after all, we all know how sometimes those holiday cards get out a little after the holidays. If you truly love your Christmas theme, you might find that you are more willing to take the time this year to decorate your home and make it a place of comfort during the winter months. If you feel like your tree could use a makeover, consider one of these unique themes to brighten up your space.

1. Asian Theme – Rather than using the classic baubles and bulbs, decorate the tree with fans and paper parasols. When you are wrapping the lights around the branches, put a few lights inside some silk lanterns to give off a colorful glow. You can support the lanterns with bamboo rods to complete the look.

2. Rustic Theme – Skip the glitzy ornaments and opt for something simple. Use burlap ribbons and handcrafted ornaments to decorate for a rustic look. Top off the tree with a simple, large bow. Don’t use a metal tree stand, but use a planting pot or rustic basket to tie your theme together. This theme works great for a comfortable look.

3. Metallic Theme – Use ornaments in various metallic hues. Bronze, silver and gold will bring out a shine rather than using colors. This is a great theme idea when you don’t want to worry about making sure everything matches perfectly.

4. Modern Theme – Opt for something truly unique and get a white Christmas tree that you decorate with bold, modern colors (such as aqua). With a perfectly coordinated theme, this can really stand out and capture people’s attention.

5. Beach Theme – Whether or not you live near the coast, you can bring the days of summer back by decorating with a beach theme. Skip the traditional ornaments and use sea shells of all sizes to decorate. For different textures, use sea stars and sand dollars to complement your theme.

For the best look, coordinate your Christmas tree with the other decorations around your home. Your holiday cards can reflect the theme of your choosing as well. This year, try something new, and you might surprise yourself with how much you like it.

There is a long list of real trees we use in America for Christmas and history about artificial trees in America and in other countries. Did you know that the standing Christmas tree originated in 16th century Germany and that the first artificial Christmas trees were developed in Germany during the 19th century? I like having a real tree in a container to bring indoors at Christmas, something my dad did when we were growing up. This Wikipedia article might give you some new ideas for making new Christmas tree traditions of your own.
